Summer 2017 Recommendations

Summer is here. Emily and I have been lucky enough to attend and travel to some incredible weddings, family gatherings and have welcomed visitors to MSP. We are feeling good about how the house is coming together and looking forward to enjoying my (our?) favorite month in Minneapolis - August. Here are a few things that have caught my attention this summer, that hopefully you can enjoy before the season is over!

Spring 2017 Recommendations

Guys. We made it! NBA playoffs are starting, there is a plethora of new music out, and Emily and I move into our first house tomorrow! A whole two block move. Wish us luck. Here are the things I've been reading, watching, listening to, eating, drinking and admiring so far this spring.

Late Summer / Early Fall Recommendations, 2016

What a whirlwind of a summer. Since the last recommendations post I started a new job at Slalom. I'm on my second project now and it's been a great experience so far, with fantastic clients. Beyond the new job, we've also had a few visitors to Minneapolis, and Emily and I took trips to Iceland and to San Luis Obispo for my 30th. It's been a great summer of exploring new places, seeing old friends and pushing myself to do the best client work I can. Perhaps most importantly, Emily defended her dissertation and received her Ph.D!

Ok, beyond the life update here are the things I've been reading, listening to, eating, drinking and admiring that have also made this summer special.

Late Winter / Early Spring Recommendations

Thanks in part to our friend El Nino, we've had quite a mild winter. I said it when I first moved here, and I'll say it again - future climate refugees will find Minnesota fairly attractive. Emily and I did our best to get outside and do some cross country skiing, jump in a frozen lake, and take trips to New York and Kansas City. Emily also finished her data collection for her dissertation and I made the decision to take a new job.

Maybe I've just been streaming Life of Pablo too much, but I'm fired up for spring.

Let's get on our Ultralight Beam and reflect on what I've loved reading, watching, eating, drinking and listening to over the last few weeks.

Here we go...

Favorites of 2015

As we approach the end of the year, there is the inevitable deluge of "lists" - what's best, worst, funniest, most heartwarming, most overlooked, most over-rated. This is another one. Why am I making lists, especially when I know that a very small number of people will read what I put down?

Because for the most part these lists are for me. They will help me remember all of the things that inspired me, entertained me, or just held my attention in 2015.

Late Summer / Early Fall Recommendations

It has been quite a summer filled with lots of visitors to Minnneapolis, traveling to some beautiful weddings, and exciting new projects at work. I can't believe football is back already, and that there are boots at the top of my closet that may come down soon.

In the midst of all this - I have read, listened, eaten or drank quite a few things that really left their mark.

Since it's also been a while since I've posted a little round up like this, there are going to be quite a few things on here.

So here we go...

April / May Recommendations

The sun is out, the NBA playoffs are in full swing and we're a week away from my birthday. Beyond what's happening right now, In the last month or so there has been plenty of culture that was worth paying attention to. Sometimes paying attention made me a bit (or very) concerned for the world, and sometimes paying attention made my day just a little better. In any case, thought I'd catalog and share what was especially captivating over the last month or so.

February / March Recommendations

The melt is on here in Minneapolis. A new project at work is getting off the ground. Beyond work and warm weather there is an incredible amount of interesting culture that has emerged over the past month or so. Here is what I've been paying attention to. Hope you find something interesting in the list below.

December / January Recommendations

After a holiday season filled with family, friends and a honeymoon! - I'm back with December and January recommendations.  Between the honeymoon and time off work there was a lot of time to consume culture. There's a mix of books, podcasts, blog posts, and movies that I've enjoyed over the last two months. Hope this helps you sort through the fray that is the internet / state of culture in the first month of 2015.

November Recommendations

As the colder weather rolls in and we get closer to the close of another year, I always get a bit more introspective (as if I wasn't stuck in my own head enough already). What was accomplished this year? What have I learned? What were some of the most memorable and meaningful moments? With this introspective state of mind I found myself drifting to philosophical discussions around work, life and purpose. Don't worry, I also found some entertaining reflections on work, life and popular culture this month. Let me know if there is anything you think I should know about in the comments!

October Recommendations

In today's overly saturated world where there is always something new or shiny, I'm always looking for help. Yes - we have algorithms a that make personal targeted recommendations for everything from workouts to music. But those inputs are always based on what you've previously done, your pre-selected and filtered bubble of information. What happens when you want to break out? Try something new? What about discovery that isn't based on previous behavior?  I do love when Spotify recommends an amazing song or band that I've never heard, but there is also something amazing about trying something recommended by a real. human. person. This is the exciting world that we live in today, where we can augment no brainier suggestions (i.e. you like the Notorious B.I.G.? Try TuPac or Nas), with human discovery.
